Life in tidbits

I slept in a house last night. It was weird.

I got up really super early after just a few hours of sleep (well, five hours, but it felt like two hours) and my sister and I made a thanksgiving dinner for my mom’s birthday. This is how tired I was: my sister asked me to do the turkey because she didn’t want to stick her hand up it’s butt. I did it, but then I couldn’t remember which way was up. I was like, hmm, breast up, but which side is the breast? So the turkey was cooked upside down and it was my fault.

After dinner and everybody leaving I passed out on the couch. I woke up once and was so tired and disoriented that I just went back to sleep. And woke up at noon. In a house, feeling all domesticated like a housepet. And I’m still tired.

It’s getting cold outside. I had a dead battery this morning. It happens every few months. I think it’s related to the bad relay noise that comes and goes every once in a while, too. Being in the city, in my sister’s driveway, it wasn’t a big deal. If I had been by the river in the middle of nowhere it could have been days before anyone drove by and jumped me. Kinda makes me think.

In a strange twist of fate, geography, and decision, I’m on my way down to the village where my mom lives to volunteer in her school for a week. It’ll be cool to see her for more than a couple hours at once, and to be around kids again (kids are honestly the thing that I miss in my hobo lifestyle). It’ll also be a nice little test of how well I can blend in the dominant culture anymore. I used to be very chameleon-ish, and often changed from student to child advocate to dog trainer to stripper all in a day. Now I’m rather myself everywhere I go, and I guess we’re about to find out how that works in the “real world.”

I’m also gonna use my mom’s warm garage to tape up the reflectix that’s come loose since last winter, clean things up, and winterize the van. Also, I’m gonna get me a little electric heater and an extension cord and I bet she’ll let me plug in in her driveway.

Wish me luck in the real world!

  1. The breast is the part with the meat. The back is the part with the spine.

Or you could deep-fry one next time and it wouldn’t matter.

  2. I think you can get a small battery pack that will put enough charge into a car to jump start it, and then you can run the vehicle to recharge the vehicle battery. Maybe the pack plugs in and gets recharged too?

  3. Actually, you are supposed to cook a turkey upside down because it doesn’t dry out the breast! So I bet your turkey was better that way. You would only need to flip it right side up if you wanted to crisp up the skin a little before serving. Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. There’s definitely a battery pack you can buy; I’m surprised you don’t have one already. I keep on in my Jeep just in case.

Good luck at school! Kids are awesome.

  5. You guys! I do know which way is up when I’m awake!

Thanks for reminding me about the battery pack. I was gonna get one a few months ago, and then I waited long enough that the burning desire passed and I never did it. Probably the cold would kill the battery tho. Which is a problem for the van, too.

  6. Maybe you could keep in it something insulated? btw, can you get rid of that camping ad, the blue frame one? It’s really distracting when reading because of the fast change rate of its products.
